Bacteriolytic Therapy for Glioblastoma
Led by Gregory J. Riggins, MD, PhD at Johns Hopkins University

This exciting study uses bacteria called Clostridium novyi-NT to infect and destroy brain tumors, and to potentially create a lasting immune response against cancer cells. This stands in contrast to conventional cancer therapies, which tend to fail against glioblastoma (GBM) because they do not eliminate the entire tumor.

In preliminary studies, it has been shown that these bacteria can be successfully and safely grown within the central areas of glioblastomas in rats, sometimes resulting in a complete disintegration of the tumor. Rats bearing malignant gliomas treated with C. noyi-NT routinely survive significantly longer than untreated rats with the same tumor and this study aims to further increase safety and efficacy. Our results will be measured by comparing imaged tumor growth and survival in treated versus untreated controls in two intracranial animal models of GBM.
