Board Member Robert Cannata Discusses his Involvement with Voices Against Brain Cancer
My favorite memory of working with VABC has to be the first meeting of the Support Group for Caregivers and Family Members of Brain Tumor Patients. I helped create and promote this group, and it blew me away to see the culmination of months of hard work. It was an amazing feeling to actually see the difference that I was making in the lives of other people.
My mother was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme in February 2007, so I understood all too well the need for this group, especially since it was the only one of its kind in New York City. It has been a success and we are planning to expand it to other cities across the country.
I discovered VABC through the social worker who was helping my mother at New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University’s Brain Tumor Center. At first, I wanted to start my own foundation, but after meeting Adam and Eric Lichtenstein, VABC founders, and Darren Port and Ken Grosso, I saw that their goals were the same as mine. I strongly supported VABC’s initiatives and the research they were funding so I made the decision to get involved.
I serve on the Board of Directors and I’m extremely active in starting new initiatives and programs to help brain cancer patients and their families. I have also traveled to Washington, DC to lobby for increased federal funding for brain cancer research. In the future, I’d like to use my interest in the law and my legal contacts to help brain tumor patients and their families with basic legal services. I would also like to become more active as a public policy advocate for brain tumor patients.
I graduated from Bucknell University in 2006 with a BA in History. After college, I worked for the New York County District Attorney’s Office and in the fall, I’ll be attending Seton Hall Law School, planning to graduate in 2011. My interests include traveling, sports and anything outdoors. I also enjoy cooking, spending time with my friends and family and I love music.
